During the first semester, six major topics are studied: review of pre-algebra skills, data exploration, proportional reasoning, probability, variation and linear equations. The text, Discovering Algebra, An Investigative Approach, does a wonderful job of presenting new topics using investigations. The student’s prior knowledge is used in the exploration of new concepts. A formal presentation of the corresponding rule or formula follows the investigation. During the second semester, five major topics are studied: linear equations, systems of equations, exponents, functions and quadratics.
Students review homework, work problems and are introduced to new topics in class. Students’ progress is assessed using homework, quizzes, class participation and tests including a final exam.
