Comparative Religions

This course emphasizes the progression of human cognition through the development of religious thought from prehistory through to the present time. The focus is on the psychological and sociological developments that mirrored the religious changes and how each influenced the other. The first semester focuses on prehistory and the eastern families, emphasizing the influence of Hinduism and Buddhism. Following Buddhism we have a unit on Theosophy which emphasizes the psychological basis of religion and provides a transition from the eastern families to the western families.

The spring is spent with the western family of religious thought following the progression from Judaism to Christianity and ends with Islam. We focus on how the similarities diverged through history to culminate in the problems we are experiencing today. A critical paper is assigned each semester which allows students to complete an in depth discovery of a topic of their choice that complements the tests given on each major religion.
