During the first semester basic reading comprehension and vocabulary skills are developed. We begin by reading fables, focusing on simple plot summaries and morals. We then read a series of short stories, which include more complex plots, vocabulary, character development and themes. In the later part of the semester we read several non-fiction articles focusing on the 1960s, including writings on the civil rights movement, the assassinations of JFK and Martin Luther King, Jr., and the changing American culture.
During the second semester, the class focuses on Ancient Greece, Greek mythology, and a reading of an annotated version of Ulysses. Skills emphasized include independent reading, vocabulary, understanding of plot, setting, characters, themes and basic literary devices.
