During the first semester students are introduced to a variety of methods that help to build skills of beginning analysis. Students are exposed to multiple literary techniques and conventions, in a cross-cultural framework that includes writings by J. Krishnamurti, Sandra Cisneros, Nikki Giovanni, Malcolm X, Paulo Coelho and James Redfield. Our examination of culture through literature focuses on the exploration of the following themes: The American Dream, Gender Roles & Expectations, Self Definition & Identity, Freedom & Entrapment, Fitting In, Beauty, and Growth, Maturity & Sexuality.
During the second semester students are introduced to “The Hero’s Journey” and archetypes as tools for literary analysis. Our thematic exploration of various literatures continues with focus on the works of Toni Morrison, Octavia Butler and Aldous Huxley.
Class time is spent discussing and questioning the material. Developing effective creative and analytical writing and communication skills is stressed. Special importance is placed upon close reading and use of textual evidence to support analysis. Students are assessed through short self-analysis pieces, essays, creative writing projects, short-answer quizzes, presentations and participation.
