Environmental Science
During the first semester we focus on conservation, recycling, and energy (in particular solar energy). In 2007 we will be installing solar panels at the school as part of a class project mid-year. As a class, we work on an energy audit of the school in order to develop ways to conserve energy. Students also create a recycling and composting plan to incorporate into the everyday school activities and responsibilities. As an assessment tool, the students create a portfolio that documents their learning throughout the semester.

During the second semester, we continue the solar energy, recycling, and composting projects. In addition, we do an environmental study of the Besant Hill land in which we study the history of the land, identify plant and animal species, and map the natural resources found on our land. The students work together as a class to create a document that discusses this environmental study. At the end of the year, the students create posters and models to demonstrate what they learned about the projects we focused on throughout the year.
