During the first semester, students review the present and past tenses, learn the command forms, pronoun placement, and expressions of time. They then begin study on the subjunctive tense, learning to make suggestions, give advice, and persuade others. Culturally, students will focus on Puerto Rico, its history and political situation and the tropical rainforest. Special events and activities are planned for Day of the Dead and the Christmas Posada.
During the second semester, students continue their study of the subjunctive tense, learning to express their hopes and wishes, debate, and give opinions. They then learn more complex verb tenses, such as future, conditional, present perfect, and the passive se. With these tenses, they make future predictions, discuss probabilities, and describe things that have happened before. Culturally, students focus on Spain, Costa Rica, and Ecuador, their art, culture, music, legends, and ecosystems. Special events and activities are planned for Cinco de Mayo.
In class, Spanish is reinforced through class discussions, readings, videos, music, grammar exercises, and oral and written projects. Projects for the first semester include interviews and a research project on a threatened tropical eco-system. Second semester projects include researching famous Hispanic artists, class debates, and the writing of a short story.
