Student Counseling Program

II. The second important program that has the sponsorship of Student Support Services is the Student Counseling Program – student counseling and life skills. Our Student Counseling Program provides the following:

(1). Students who have special emotional and counseling needs receive the professional guidance of Dr. Marilyn Ruman. She also collaborates with family, faculty, and other involved professionals to provide the maximum support for our students.

(2). All of our Instructional Support students receive help in learning life skills and strategies, which are essential to personal and academic success, including:

SUPPORT: Students receive direct support from faculty and advisors, instruction from faculty, counselors, and resource staff. BHS provides each student with a caring and encouraging environment. This includes emotional guidance if necessary.

EMPOWERMENT: Students develop skills to perceive that they can play important roles in community life.

BOUNDARIES & EXPECTATIONS: Clear rules and consequences, and position adult role models provide students with clear boundaries for behavior and standards of achievement.

COMMITMENT: Students are challenged to bring discipline, curiosity, engagement, and motivation to learning.

VALUE EDUCATIONAL: Students are encouraged to explore their own beliefs while participating in a community that respects equality, and personal responsibility.

SOCIAL COMPETENCY: Students are expected to develop knowledge of conflict resolution, interpersonal skills, and comfort with people of different cultural, racial, and ethnic backgrounds.

SELF-IDENTITY: At a time of great change, students are encouraged to develop the confidence to answer, “Who am I?” which will provide a foundation for their life.
